Tom Blyth’s father died when he was 15
Tom was born on 2 February 1995 in Birmingham and spent his early years in Woodthorpe, a suburb of Nottingham. His father, producer Gavin Blyth, passed away when Tom was 15. His mother’s name is Charlotte, and she previously worked as a career counselor.
Tom received his education at Arnold Hill Academy and Bilborough College. Additionally, he spent part of his childhood in North Yorkshire, attending primary school in Tockwith. His mother was the one who recognized his interest in drama.
She enrolled him in drama classes at the Television Workshop. Later, Tom became a member of the National Youth Theatre. His journey into acting began on the way home from a particularly long and rainy day spent without success in soliciting.
“I was reading something about Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver going to Juilliard. I’d read about Juilliard my whole life and thought it was a complete pipe dream. But I was so sick of my day job and felt stuck in a rut … where I was like, I know I can achieve more,” he said to Air Mail.

The night Juilliard applications closed felt like a sign for Tom. The audition in New York coincided with his 21st birthday, and to his delight, he was accepted. Pursuing his passion, he fulfilled his dream by training at the Juilliard School in New York City, graduating in 2020.
Acting opportunities came to Tom Blyth after graduation from Juilliard
Blyth initiated his acting career with supporting roles in the 2010 films Robin Hood and Pelican Blood. However, it was in 2018 that he gained recognition for his performance alongside Richard Mason in the film Scott and Sid.
Following graduation, acting opportunities gradually came his way. Blyth portrayed a schoolboy in the coming-of-age locker-room production Scott and Sid and an army officer named Glen Byam Shaw in Benediction.
However, the breakthrough came when he landed the role of William H. Bonney in Billy the Kid. His character is an American gunslinging antihero, the son of Irish Catholic immigrants, who was orphaned at 15 and is rumored to have killed eight men before his fatal shooting at the age of 21.
To prepare for the series, which premiered on Epix, Blyth delved into research, including a road trip to Billy’s grave in New Mexico and traversing Arizona to immerse himself in the Western landscape. He also worked on perfecting a thick American accent for the role.

“I think when you … lose your entire family and you’re forced to fend for yourself … from the age of 15, you become cynical,” Blyth said. The show-runner and screenwriter of the new adaptation, Michael Hirst, found the moral gray areas that shaped the young outlaw particularly compelling.
According to Blyth, Hirst was unafraid to explore the complex questions surrounding the narrative, such as the implications for a “white family from Ireland escaping oppression” who then settled in a territory where Native Americans have long resided.
Blyth notes that the story delves into the cycle of oppression, where those who were once subjugated in their homeland end up subjugating others in a new territory. In 2022, Blyth made a guest appearance in the HBO series The Gilded Age.
He then played Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, an adaptation of the prequel to The Hunger Games with the same title. His upcoming projects include roles in Discussion Materials, adapted from Bill Keenan’s memoir of the same name.
